Léon Froundjian – I am a photographer of Egyptian, Armenian and Syro-Lebanese origins, living in Milan, Italy. After graduating in Mechanical Engineering at the American University of Cairo, I grew my passion for visual arts while documenting the streets of Cairo during the Egyptian revolution. I embraced this shift in life and vocation and moved to New York, USA, where I earned my Diploma in Filmmaking, from the New York Film Academy. I continued my artistic training by moving to Milan, where I obtained a Diploma in Full Advanced Photography from the Istituto Italiano di Fotografia. The merge of filming into photography shaped a cinematic eye in my style, which strives for a narrative quality of the image and its content.
My multiethnic background and life experiences in different countries, made me sensitive and curious to the vital role that culture plays in the sense of self. And so I deepened my awareness into Anthropological studies and training offered by Oxford University, UK. This allows me a closer insider perspective on the inner worlds of my subjects, so as to reveal their greater uniqueness and authenticity. Ultimately, to me photography is a continuous consciousness research, driven by transcending the physical and embodying the mystical: it is an intimate experience of the light and shadow of life.
